Character education is one of education that should be taught from an early age to children. Research shows that children who have good character will be successful in the future. Do you still remember the research on children who were tested by not eating cake in limited time? They were told not to eat cake when they were alone in the room within a few minutes. CCTV is installed in the room, through CCTV researcher can see that there are some children who are patient, and there are some children who cannot wait until time finished, starting from just touching until eating it. In the future, children who were patient and not ate the cake when tested become success in their life. You can read Stephen covey’s book for detail.
One of the characters that should be imparted to children is responsible. This responsible attitude should be socialized and trained from the early age, so in the end they are accustomed to and they have responsibility characters.
Below are tips to educate kids to be responsible:
1. Give examples.
The first thing parents should do is set a good example. Children are the best imitators. They will imitate the actions of people around them, and the people closest to them are parents.
If you make promises to the child, then you should have a sense of responsibility to keep them. When you keep promises, then the child will imitate your actions.
2. Tell a story.
Children are very fond of listening to stories. Even my kids asked us to tell story every they want to sleep. This moment is suitable and the most opportune time to instill an attitude of responsibility. Choose a story that contains a positive message to be responsible.
3. Give an explanation.
The third tips is closely related to the above tips. Give them the moral of the story upon the story.
For example, explaining that if your kids involved in helping clean up their toys after playing, that means helping other family members and reduce the burden on family members. So with having responsible attitude , your child can give positive impact to others.
4. Train for simple tasks.
These tips should be done every day. Try to remind your kids if they are unaware of this, because this is the most fundamental step in educating responsibility.
Give them easy and simple tasks in accordance with their age, such as dressing themselves, tidy up toys after playing, put dirty clothes in place, and so on.
5. Train your kids to make decisions.
One of the things that is closely related to the responsibility attitude is a skill to make a decision.
This can be done by asking your kids, "where will you go in this holidays?" Or "what are you going to eat tonight?". Let them choose what they want, let them make their own decisions without any influence from you.
6. Reward and punishment.
Make an agreement with your kids. Provide a description to them that every action has consequences or impacts, both positive and negative effects. Write your agreement with your kids that contain things for instance if they neglect their duties what they will receive, and if they commit to the job what they receive. Do not forget, give them praise when they managed to do something successfully and they are able to be responsible.
